WHY WE EXIST
Independent film is full of remarkable voices who never get a first chance. Barriers to funding, access, and mentorship keep countless new filmmakers from breaking through - not because they lack talent, but because they lack opportunity. The First Rodeo Film Foundation exists to remove those barriers and help first-time directors make their debut feature and share it with the world. By supporting new filmmakers who, in turn, mentor the next generation, we’re building a continuous cycle of opportunity — a model that strengthens the independent film community and makes creative careers more sustainable.
This work is powered by charitable, tax-deductible contributions from those who believe in independent film’s future.
MISSION
Launching emerging filmmakers
through funding, mentorship, and exposure.
we empower new voices
to break into the film industry
while fostering public engagement with bold, independent cinema.
MARQUEE PROGRAM
Our FLAGSHIP INITIATIVE: FIRST RODEO FEATURE FELLOWSHIP funds and mentors a first-time feature film director. Filmmakers are identified through open submissions, targeted outreach, and industry referrals.
Each project is reviewed by an advisory board of filmmakers, producers, and creative professionals who evaluate the script, the director's vision, and the feasibility of the project. The board collectively determines which director will be selected for support each cycle.
Once a director is chosen, they receive project funding, tailored mentorship from industry professionals, and continued support through development, production, and post-production. The fellowship cycle concludes with a community screening of the completed feature. Directors who complete the program are invited to join our growing network of mentors, contributing to future workshops, community events, and youth programs - passing their experience on to the next generation of filmmakers.
THE TEAM
First Rodeo Film Foundation was founded by independent filmmakers, Tyler Dunning Evans and Leah Elizabeth Rucinski, alongside William Pierrepont, whose financial insight and strategic vision underpin the foundation’s sustainable model. United by a shared belief in bold, original storytelling, they are committed to empowering the next generation of filmmakers.
